Hydra's Whisper
“ | This unique demolition tool is a long, metal tube packed with explosives. The Hydra’s Whisper is designed to destroy out-of-reach movement impairing structures and detonate any mines along the length of the tube. | „ |
— In-game description |
The Hydra's Whisper is a Colonial large deployable Explosive Charge.
Description
The Hydra's Whisper is a Colonial large explosive that is deployed on the ground in a 1.5s animation then detonates 3 successive explosions after 5 seconds. The three explosions it generates deal a total of 550 Demolition damage at the center and quickly decreasing amounts in a 2m radius.
As a Large Item, the player can only carry one on the shoulder with both hands.
It is specifically designed to destroy very resistant structures (Garrisoned House, Town Base, Relic Base, concrete structures like Dragon's Teeth). It has a chance to turn into ruins Garrisoned Houses that suffer from devastation when dealing the killing blow. It can also instantly destroy the obstacles that can be dismantled with a wrench: Barbed Wire, Barbed Wire Fence, Tank Trap, Anti-Tank Mine, AP Mine.
It is inefficient and impractical to use against vehicles. It has a chance to disable the subsystems of armored vehicles.
Usage
Large Item Handling
It can be picked up from the ground with V
and dropped on the ground with V
(or Shift+V
if another "V" interaction is available). It can be submitted to a structure/vehicle's stockpile or inventory with V
or by clicking the "Submit Large Item" button in their interface. It is automatically dropped if the player draws a weapon or equipment.
Planting the charge
In order to deploy the Hydra's Whisper:
- Equip the charge on shoulder
- Plant the charge at the desired location - press
LMB
- After a 1.5s deployment animation that immobilizes the player the charge is set at the player's feet and detonates 5s later.
Production
Structure | Input(s) | Output | Time |
---|---|---|---|
![]() | 100 x Basic Materials ![]() 80 x Explosive Powder ![]() | 1 Crate of 5 x Hydra's Whisper ![]() | 00:01:40 |
Must be fully researched in the Weapons and Structures Tech Tree in order to be produced.
Storage
It does not stack in inventories (1 per slot).
Unlike most Large Items, it can only be stored in the stockpiles of Bases (32k max), it does not fit in Material Pallets, Rooster - Tumblebox Trailer, Material Transfer Stations, Small Flatbed Car, or Storage Rooms.
Crates of Hydra's Whisper can be directly submitted to any item stockpile that accepts that item to transfer their content. The crates can also be stored in the crate stockpiles of Storage Depots (1000 public, 100 per Reserve Stockpile), Seaports (1000 public, 100 per Reserve Stockpile), Shipping Containers (60), or Storage Ships (1000).
It can be transported by almost any vehicle with inventory slots. However it is much more efficient to transport it in bulk amounts as crates, either delivering them to a Base's stockpile with a Truck or to a crate stockpile with shipping vehicles carrying Shipping Containers.
Tactics
Due its relatively low damage output, it's recommended to use multiple charges in a coordinated attack with other players to significantly damage or outright destroy a structure in a single strike. Since the carriers are slow and vulnerable, their attack can be supported by suppressing fire or with Smoke Grenades. This rush tactic is particularly effective against Safe Houses, which are highly resistant to other damage types and can only be destroyed from the inside.
Trivia
- The design and icon for the Hydra's Whisper appears to be based off the Bangalore Torpedo, which is a series of explosives contained in a tube. They were famously used during D-Day in World War II to clear barbed wire that prevented Allied soldiers from leaving the beaches.
- Despite having three separate explosions when detonating, these explosions do not individually deal the damage (as damage is dealt all at once).
- Hydra's Whispers, as a small mid-game demolition charge, were originally a Colonial-exclusive item that had no Warden counterpart. This was changed in Update 1.52, with the satchel becoming Warden-exclusive in order to fill a similar role to the Hydra's Whisper (an infantry anti-structure tool).
