Crates are a type of item that is specially designed to contain a bulk amount of items, allowing for easier transportation.

Description

Crates are a broad term used to describe a single stack item that comes packaged with a certain number of items, consisting of a bulk amount of a single type of equipment or materials. The vast majority of item crates are produced at either a Factory or a Mass Production Factory, with the exception of the Refinery able to make material crates, and their materials able to be packed in the interface of a Seaport, Storage Depot, or Shipping Container. All crates visually look the same, except for a small icon in the bottom right representing the item (i.e. the icon of the item contained in it). Players can hover their mouse over a crate to show what items are in their and how much.

The contents of crates can contain vary wildly, as well as their actual encumbrance compared to their crate form. All crates, regardless of their contents, weigh the same (55% encumbrance). The amount of items contained in a crate is specific to the item: a crate of 7.62mm contains 40 while a crate of Gas Grenades contain 10. You can hover your mouse over a crate to display a tooltip describing the item type and quantities inside. See the Factory page, Mass Production Factory page , or each item pages to check the amount per crate.

The use of crates allows the transport of large quantities of equipment from the production centers to the frontline bases (i.e. A single standard Truck with 15 slots can carry 15 crates of 7.62mm, which is a total of 600 individual 7.62mm).

Creating Crates

Factory & Mass Production Factory

Crates of items can be produced by placing orders in a Factory or Mass Production Factory. When retrieving an order, the crates are automatically generated in the player's inventory. Crates produced in orders set to "personal" or "squad" are reservable.

Refinery

A player can retrieve the finished materials in their personal refining queue as crates by pressing RMB on the desired materials and selecting the Retrieve as Crates option. Enough materials must be in the queue to make at least one crate:

The amount of crates retrieved cannot be selected, it's as many as your inventory can fit.

All crates produced this way are reservable.

Material Crate Packing

Materials (Basic Materials, Explosive Materials, Diesel, etc..) and liquid canisters can also be packed into crates while in the interface of a Storage Depot, Seaport, or Shipping Container by pressing RMB on them and selecting the Pack Material Crate option. All materials of the selected type will be transformed into crates if there's enough space in the inventory, the amount required per crate depends on the materials type. The crates created are not reservable.

Inversely, those crates of materials can be transformed back into stacks with the Unpack Material Crate option.

Submitting Crates

Crates cannot be directly opened to take their content, they must be submitted to a stockpile (typically a base stockpile). This is done by opening the base's menu with E, then RMB on the crate in your inventory and select the option Submit to Stockpile or Submit All to stockpile. The latter will submit all crates in your inventory while the former will let you choose how many crates the player wants to submit.

Once submitted, the crate(s) are destroyed and their content added to the stockpile. Players can then retrieve the items by assembling them with LMB.

Certain crates (typically Large Items) can be directly submitted to certain stockpiles (such as Storage Rooms, Material Pallets, or Material Transfer Stations).

Storage & Transportation

Crates can be submitted and stored into crate stockpiles found only in Seaports, Storage Depots, and Storage Ships. These stockpiles keep the crates intact, allowing for players to safely store equipment and materials for future use. Crates that are reservable can be submitted into a Reserve Stockpile. You can check if a crate is reservable by reading its description. Storing a crate in a public stockpile makes it not reservable.

Crates can be transported by trucks but also in a Shipping Container, which can hold up to 60 crates. The container must be packaged and deposited on a Shipping Vehicles (Flatbed, Barge, Freighter, Flatbed Car) with a Crane. Unloading the crates from the shipping container can ONLY be done at a Seaport or Storage Depot.

A crate is marked reservable in the tooltip description.
