A kit for producing a prototype of (Vehicle) at a Garage.
In-game description
A kit for producing a crate of (Item) at Factories or Mass Production Factories.
In-game description

A Prototype Kit is an item generated by Technology research that is used to manufacture prototypes of certain weapons, vehicles, or structures.

Acquisition

Prototype Kits of technologies currently being researched can be produced at Engineering Centers by clicking the relevant icons on the Technology Trees, slightly advancing the research progress. Weapon/Structure Prototype Kits cost Aluminum Alloy, while Vehicle Prototype Kits cost either Iron Alloy or Copper Alloy (depending on the position on the vehicle tech tree). The amounts required vary depending on the research level on the Technology Tree.

Use

Prototype Kits are only used to manufacture certain item prototypes at a Factory or Mass Production Factory, vehicle prototypes at a Garage or Shipyard, and structure prototypes at a Construction Yard.

In the interface of the relevant production structure, a Prototype Kit can be used with RMB and selecting the "Produce/Build Prototype" option. Production is then initiated normally. Prototype items cost the same as their non-prototype version, while prototype vehicles and structures all cost only 100 Basic Materials.

Prototype items are items are identical to their standard version, while prototype vehicles and prototype structures take more damage and cost more to repair than their standard version.

Tips

For Prototype Kits of weapons that cost Refined Materials, it is better to use multiple in a single order at a Mass Production Factory to get the discount on the production cost.

Since all prototype vehicles costs only 100 Basic Materials, it is more cost-effective to use the Prototypes than standard version for vehicles that cost Refined Materials.

Trivia

Despite the Field Modification Center allowing vehicles to be upgraded to higher tiers, Prototype vehicles cannot be upgraded to higher tiers. (A Prototype Light Tank cannot be upgraded to a fully teched Light Tank, AKA a T1 vehicle)

There used to be a tech tree mechanic which allowed you skip multiple tech tiers in the Tech Tree. With this mechanic, depending on how far away you were from the last fully teched tier, you had a lower chance of successfully obtaining a Prototype Kit. This was later removed, and you must now progess through the tech tree tier by tier (i.e. T1 > T2 > T3 > etc.)
