The sound emitted by an active listening kit.

The Listening Kit (colloquially known as a LK) is a large item placed on Tripods that allows Factions to intercept Map Intelligence from enemy Watch Towers and other intelligence producing structures.

Description

The Listening Kit is a Mounted Equipment that must be mounted on a deployed tripod to become a Deployed Listening Kit structure. As a Large Item, the player can only carry one at a time in their "Large Item" slot, occupying both hands.

The Deployed Listening Kit listens to the map intelligence transmitted by every enemy intelligence sources (Watch Towers, Observation Towers, Observation Bunkers, Radio Backpacks, and intel gathering vehicles) within a 80m radius. The intel collected is displayed on the map screen for every player in the faction. The enemy intel structures that are eavesdropped on appear as flashing icons on the map.

The Deployed Listening Kit emits soft 'beeps' every 2 to 5 seconds that are audible from 10 meters away (see audio sample lower in the page).

Deployed Listening Kits use the same visibility mechanic as soldiers: they are invisible behind solid obstacles, in or behind smoke clouds, in the darkness at night, in the Snow Storm fog, inside bushes (though revealed to people within 10m). They are often only betrayed by their periodic beeping sound. (Play sound ▶️)

As structures, Deployed Listening Kits are affected by decay and die to it in 24 hours (10 times faster if near Region border) unless it is prevented by Bases or Maintenance Tunnels.

Usage

Large Item Handling
It can be picked up from the ground with V and dropped on the ground with V (or Shift+V if another "V" interaction is available). It can be submitted to a structure/vehicle's stockpile or inventory with V or by clicking the "Submit Large Item" BtSubmitLargeItem.png button in their interface. It can be retrieved from a Material Pallet, Rooster - Tumblebox, or Storage Room by pressing V without having to open their interface.

Mounting
To mount it press B then aim at a deployed tripod and press LMB. Once deployed, it becomes a "Deployed Listening Kit" structure.

To disassemble the Deployed Listening Kit, open up its interface with E and click the "Pack Up" button BtDisassembleTripod.png in the bottom right. Once disassembled, the Listening Kit and the tripod are dropped on the ground.

Storage

It does not stack in inventories (1 per slot).
It can be stored in the stockpile of Bases (32k max) but also in Material Pallets (60), Material Transfer Stations (1000), Rooster - Tumblebox Trailer (20), Small Flatbed Car (50) or Storage Rooms (100).
Crates of Listening Kit can be directly submitted to any item stockpile that accepts that item to transfer their content. The crates can also be stored in the crate stockpiles of Storage Depots (1000 public, 100 per Reserve Stockpile), Seaports (1000 public, 100 per Reserve Stockpile), Shipping Containers (60), or Storage Ships (1000).
It can be transported by almost any vehicle with inventory slots. However it is much more efficient to transport it in bulk amounts as crates, either delivering them to a Base's stockpile with a Truck or to a crate stockpile with shipping vehicles carrying Shipping Containers.

Tactics

  • Because tripods can be deployed pretty much anywhere, Listening Kits are best installed in areas difficult to access and rarely used by the enemy but still within range of intel transmitting structures.
  • Observation Bunkers and Observation Towers are prime targets for Listening Kits given their large intel gathering radius.
  • Deployed Listening Kits are not faction locked, allowing disassembling of enemy listening kits to be repurposed by the opposing faction, or to despawn 5 minutes later.
  • Listening Kits can be placed inside bunkers. It is thus possible to build a Trench and Bunker with a doorway, place the Listening Kit inside, then remove the Trench and doorway to make the kit much harder to find and remove.
  • Since enemy intel-gathering structures stop working if they are within 220 meters on their side of a Frontier Border, then friendly Listening Kits placed near them won't intercept anything.
  • The sound made by the listening kit can be modified with the "Effect Volume" slider in the audio tab.
