The precursor to the storm rifle, the Sampo Auto-Rifle, is a mastercraft of its day. With a single shot and automatic fire mode, this versatile rifle may not reach the fire rates of automatic weapons but more than makes up for it with utility.
In-game description

The Sampo Auto-Rifle 77 (simply known as a Sampo) is a selective-fire Warden Auto-Rifle that uses 7.62mm as ammunition.

Description

It is a Warden 7.62mm primary weapon with two firing modes toggled with F: semi-automatic (S) and automatic (A). It has a 12-round magazine. It loses stability slower than other rifles while moving, and even allows the player to walk while aiming without losing too much stabilty.

In automatic mode it has medium damage (36-54 SubtypeSBIcon.png), a high fire rate (240 rounds/min), and a medium to long-range (24m effective, 38m max). it has decent accuracy and medium recoil. It kills in three shots within its effective range (only 12% chance to kill in two). It excels in close-to-mid-range engagements but it is ill-suited for longer ranges.

In semi automatic mode the gun has a higher recoil, lower fire rate (72 rounds/min) but better damage (45-67 SubtypeSBIcon.png), accuracy, and range (25-40). It is best suited for medium to long-range engagements (25-30m), behaving like a slightly worse Argenti Rifle. A stable firing position is recommended in this mode.

Because of its two firing modes it cannot use any rifle attachment (e.g. Bayonet).

The Soldier Uniform reduces the Sampo's weight by 25%.

It does not stack in the player's inventory (1 per slot).

Mass Production Factory orders must have at least 3 crates.

Storage

It does not stack in structure or vehicle inventories (1 per slot). It can only be stored in the stockpile of Bases (32k max).
Crates of Sampo Auto-Rifle 77 can be directly submitted to any item stockpile that accepts that item to transfer their content. The crates can also be stored in the crate stockpiles of Storage Depots (1000 public, 100 per Reserve Stockpile), Seaports (1000 public, 100 per Reserve Stockpile), Shipping Containers (60), or Storage Ships (1000).

It can be transported by almost any vehicle with inventory slots. However it is much more efficient to transport it in bulk amounts as crates, either delivering them to a Base's stockpile with a Truck or to a crate stockpile with shipping vehicles carrying Shipping Containers.

Tactics

When switched to automatic fire the Sampo cannot drop below 40% stability simply from movement. This makes the Sampo an excellent choice for assaulting trenches and clearing bunkers. While the Sampo's fire modes allow the user to adapt to any scenario, its range is noticeably worse than other rifles.

Carrying slightly more than the recommended 2 to 3 magazines is recommended due to the automatic fire mode.

In semi-automatic fire mode, the Sampo usually downs players in 2 shots but can rarely require 3 shots, the reverse is true in automatic fire mode, it typically downs players in 3 shots but may rarely require only 2 shots.

In automatic fire mode, the Sampo isn't ideal for use as a typical automatic weapon, such as sustained suppression. It has the fire rate of a submachine gun but the magazine capacity of a rifle and can only sustain 3 seconds of automatic fire. Automatic fire mode is also not recommended beyond mid-range engagements as the heavy recoil will degrade the weapon stability quickly without proper cover.

For mid-range engagements, it's best used with proper cover and firing in bursts or even rapid single shots to conserve the limited magazine size and enhance accuracy.

The Sampo is particularly effective in ambushes.

One effective tactic is to pre-aim to achieve maximum stability before moving, taking advantage of the Sampo's 40% stability floor. This allows movement, albeit at a slower pace, which would compromise accuracy with other rifles.

Trivia

  • The rifle is likely named after a magical device in old Finnish mythos.
    • Usually, a Finnish naming scheme implies a weapon to be of Nevish origin
    • However, just like it's succesor the Aalto Storm Rifle 24, the Sampo is actually a Caoivish design
  • The Sampo's design highly resembles that of the No.2 Loughcaster, with it's design possibly being based of the real life Pedersen device that was used to convert american M1903 Springfield bolt-action rifles into semi-automatic firearms
