Observation Bunker

A radio bunker that provides intel to friendly units about the surrounding area. Reinforced with wood, it can withstand more punishment than a standard radio tower, and therefore is capable of increased effectiveness.
In-game description

The Observation Bunker (also known as an OBS Bunker) is a player-built defensive Bunker modification that automatically gathers Map Intelligence for its faction when powered. It can also be entered by a player to view very far.

Construction

A Tier 2 Observation Bunker can be constructed by modifying a Tier 2 Bunker with a Hammer and 50 Basic Materials if it has the following requirements:

Tier 3

A Tier 2 Observation Bunker can be upgraded to Tier 3 with 10 Concrete Materials if it is connected to a Bunker Base (through trenches or bunkers) with the Concrete Structures CivicMaterialsIcon.png upgrade.

Alternatively a Tier 3 Bunker can be modified into a Tier 3 Observation Bunker for the same cost if it has the same requirements as Tier 2 construction plus:

  • Concrete must be dry.
  • Connected Bunker Base must have unlocked the Concrete Structures CivicMaterialsIcon.png upgrade.

This method is more expensive overall as it requires spending Concrete Materials twice.

Concrete Settling:
It must dry off for 24 hours but it already works while wet. The duration increases during Snow Storms and Rain Storms depending on their intensity (up to double with highest intensity).

While very sturdy when dry, it is vulnerable while still wet. The vulnerability depends on how wet the concrete is and functions as a damage multiplier. Wet concrete that's just been placed has a x10 damage multiplier compared to dry concrete. After 8 hours the damage multiplier is roughly x3, and x2 after 12 hours.

Reconstruction

When destroyed, it leaves behind a husk that can be either destroyed or rebuilt. Reconstruction uses the same tool and materials as the construction of its current tier and has the same requirements. It cannot be rebuilt if an enemy base is less than 25m away. The reconstruction restores all small modifications and infrastructure modifications installed inside.

Structural Integrity

An Observation Bunker modification decreases the Structural Integrity of its Bunker Network: moderately if Tier 2, slightly if Tier 3.

Use

Intel Gathering

When it is powered with 1000W it automatically gathers Map Intelligence in a 130 meter radius at Tier 2 and 180m at Tier 3, detecting players, vehicles, and structures, and broadcasts it to its faction. Its range is indicated on the map by a semi-transparent white circle around it. It can only gather intel in the Region it is in, even when built close to a border.

Players can see their faction's intel on their map, but the intel displayed is only updated when they interact with a Base or if they have a Radio or Radio Backpack equipped.

The intel gathering is affected by:

  • Scout Uniform: players wearing one have an 80% chance of not being seen during each regular scan
  • Rain Storm: The scanning radius decreases depending on the storm intensity. At maximum intensity it is halved.
  • Frontier Border: Intel gathering structures stop working if they are within 220 meters of a contested border (a red line that shows up between two hexes).

The map intel it broadcasts can be listened to by enemy Listening Kits and Intelligence Centers.

Infrastructure Bonus:
Its range can be increased by adding certain Infrastructure Modifications of the "Garrison" type IconInfrastructureCommand.png to the Bunker Base network it is connected to (+1% per infrastructure, +20% max). The maximum potential range is 156 meters at Tier 2 and 216 meters at Tier 3. The increase isn't shown on the bunker's circle size on the map.

Spotter Position

A friendly soldier can enter the Bunker from inside to be able to see 230 meters.

Resistance

It is immune to small arms, fragmentation grenades, and 12.7mm machine gun fire, but not to heavier explosives. With Tier 3 it becomes more resistant to most explosives.

Tactics

When comparing the Observation Bunkers to the Watchtower, they are more expensive, take longer to build, and have costlier upkeep in order to preventdecay (must be built with a Bunker Base and Engine Room). They also consume power to function, meaning you have to refuel the engine room every 48 hours with 2 cans of Diesel.

However, they are far more damage-resistant than regular Watchtowers and can see much farther. They are especially useful to watch region border areas since their range allows them to be placed outside the 150m fast decay area from the border and thus not need to be rebuilt every few hours. The longer range is also useful to watch a river (ship traffic) and the other side (enemy defenses).

OBS Bunker Spotting
The OBS Bunker can be entered the spotter's seat, which has a 230m viewing distance, making it a valuable asset for artillery by allowing players to aim an entire battery from the relative safety of a fortified position and at a greater range than is possible with binoculars. This is especially important if the artillery in question is meant to defend a coastline from enemy watercraft. Most vessels will be operating beyond the reach of most other weapons and possibly past the maximum range of binoculars as well.

Trivia

  • The Observation Bunker was added in Update 0.46 ('Entrenched'), which overhauled defenses. It is the second player-built structure in the game that players can build in order to provide map intelligence coverage.
  • The Spotter seat was added in Update 1.54 ('Naval Warfare') in order to give players a better way of spotting Large Ships, especially when doing them off of islands.
