ATrench is a player-made oblong hole in the ground dug with a Shovel that serve as a defensive position for soldiers. It can be upgraded for more health.

Construction

A Tier 1 Trench is dug with a Shovel.

It can be connected to Bunkers and other trenches to build longer pathways. Trenches can either join up on their ends or in their middle. During placement the trench snaps automatically to existing trenches or bunkers, hold Shift to disable this.

It cannot be built on steep slopes, Beaches, ice, or paved areas. It also can't be built on Roads or Railway Tracks, unlike Trench Connectors.

Construction

A Tier 2 Trench can be upgraded to Tier 3 with a Hammer and 10 Concrete Materials if it is connected (by bunkers and trenches) to a Bunker Base with the Concrete Structures Concrete Materials Icon.png upgrade. The Concrete Materials takes 24 hours to dry, during which the Trench is more vulnerable.

Use

Trenches are a good firing position and cover. It is difficult to hit a soldier in a trench with small arms. Unlike the Dug Foxhole, trenches can be linked together in a network. They are pretty sturdy structures and are very resistant to Artillery shelling. They also protect soldiers from the cold. Tanks can cross trenches (except Tankettes and Scout Tanks), every other vehicle will require the trench to have the "Bridge" modification installed to be able to cross otherwise they hit an invisible wall.

Trenches are neutral structures by default- if an enemy takes your trench, they can use it against you. For this reason care must be taken when digging trenches to avoid accidentally aiding the enemy and hampering one's own team. Both teams are able to upgrade or modify trenches unless they are connected to a Bunker Base, which prevents enemies from adding or removing modifications.

There are two trench variants: Trench Connector and Trench Emplacement.

Modifications

Trenches can be upgraded with several small modifications simultaneously. After selecting an option your character will do a short animation (if you have the required materials) and the modification will appear, no hammering required. Modifications can be removed by right clicking on the upgrade option.

Name Icon Description Cost Removal Cost
Barbed Wire BarbedWireDay.png Slows the enemy infantry attempting to invade this Trench. 1 BarbedWireMaterial.png 20 Basic Materials.png
Sandbags Sandbags.png A defensive barrier that hinders enemy movement and provides cover during combat. Note: Sandbags cover a third the length of a trench, or one side of a trench connector. Soldiers inside a trench cannot shoot over sandbags, and you cannot exit a trench from a side that has sandbags. This means you can be completely trapped if all trench sides have sandbags. 1 SandbagsMaterial.png 20 Basic Materials.png

Reservation

A trench can be reserved for a Squad TrenchReservationIcon.png in its upgrade menu to prevent non-members from modifying it or attaching Trenches or Bunkers to it. Note that a trench not connected to a Bunker Base can be modified by the enemy even if you've reserved it. Inversely, the enemy can't modify your trench if it's connected to a bunker base even if you didn't reserve it.

Fill In

A tier 1 trench or trench husk can be filled in TrenchFillInIcon.png in its upgrade menu to remove it and restore the landscape around it. It creates a blueprint over the trench which must be dug with a shovel.

Tier 2 Trenches can also be filled in but they require Basic Materials and an Advanced Construction Vehicle.

Demolishing

Trenches and trench blueprints that are less then 3 hours old can be instantly demolished TrenchDemolishIcon.png by the original builder.

Trench Husk

When a trench is destroyed, it leaves behind a husk.

Trench husks are not fully collapsed, soldiers can still hide inside them by crouching but it offers worse cover than a normal trench. Unlike normal trenches, all vehicles can drive over trench husks.

The trench can be rebuilt from the husk by using the hammer in upgrade mode and pressing E. This will replace the husk with a trench blueprint at the tier it used to have, for the cost of that tier (e.g. shoveling for Tier 1, Hammer and 30 bmats for Tier 2). All previously installed modifications are kept and don't need to be reinstalled after trench reconstruction.

Husks can also be filled in with a shovel via the option in the upgrade menu.

Husks can also be destroyed with explosives, to make space for different structures for example. The trench husk has the same max health as the trench it comes from. Or you can wait for decay to destroy it. Husk decay cannot be prevented and is usually the same speed as the decay near region borders.

Being in a trench husk does not protect from Snow Storms.

A Trench husk still spreads Bunker Base upgrades to connected trenches and bunkers.
