In-game description

The Artillery Garrison (also known as the Howitzer Garrison, or Howi Garrison) is a player-built defensive Bunker modification that automatically retaliates against artillery if it is hit when garrisoned.

Construction

A Tier 1 Artillery Garrison can be built by modifying any Tier 1 Bunker with a Hammer and 120 Basic Materials if it has the following requirements:

The direction of the gun is chosen by moving the Mouse scroll vertical.png while your cursor is on the Artillery Garrison option of the upgrade menu.

Installing that modification significantly decreases (0.74) the Structural Integrity of its Bunker Network.

Tier 2

A Tier 2 Artillery Garrison can be constructed by modifying a Tier 2 Bunker with a Hammer and 200 Basic Materials or by upgrading a Tier 2 Artillery Garrison if the connected Bunker Base has unlocked the Defensive Garrisons (Tier 2) InfantryGarrisons02.png upgrade

Tier 3

A Tier 3 Artillery Garrison is built by modifiying a Tier 3 Bunker or by upgrading a Tier 2 Artillery Garrison (the latter being cheaper overall) with 20 Concrete Materials if the connected Bunker Base has unlocked the Artillery Garrisons (Tier 3) FortT3HowitzerAIIcon.png upgrade. The concrete requires 24 hours to dry (longer if there is a Snow Storm or Rain Storm) during which the structure already works but is more vulnerable.

Reconstruction

When destroyed, it leaves behind a husk that can be either destroyed or rebuilt. Reconstruction uses the same tool and materials as the construction of its current tier and has the same requirements. It cannot be rebuilt if it is connected by trenches & bunkers to an enemy Bunker Base. The reconstruction restores all small modifications and infrastructure modifications installed inside.

Use

Garrison

When its Garrison is active (large flag on top), it automatically fires a 120mm artillery cannon on any enemy infantry, vehicle, or structure that attacks it (or a bunker piece in the same Bunker Network) with High Explosive or Incendiary High Explosive damage. It has a 120 degree firing arc, and a range of 25-175 meters at Tier 1 then 25-600m at Tier 2 and Tier 3. The Howitzer gun takes 2-3 seconds to start returning fire then fires a shell every few seconds (T1:15s, T2:13s, T3:10s). Each shell deals its full 500 High Explosive damage in a 4 meter radius and decreasing amounts in a 11.25m radius. The garrison's shells will randomly land within a wide radius (T1:40m, T2:35m, T3:25m) of its target.

Each enemy shell/rocket can only trigger a single Artillery Garrison, even if multiple Bunker Networks are hit or if multiple Artillery Garrisons are on the Bunker Network that is hit. When a Bunker Network with multiple Artillery Garrisons is hit once then only one Artillery Garrison starts retaliating, but if a second enemy shell hits then a second Artillery Garrison will start retaliating.

The amount of retaliation fire from one Artillery Garrison generated by one shell/rocket hit varies:

If all Artillery Garrisons in a Bunker Network are busy retaliating when another shell hits then the retaliation series of the first Artillery Garrison is restarted.

It does not return fire when hit by enemy Artillery Garrisons.

The Artillery Garrison retaliation targets the attacking vehicle/structure rather than the gunner themself. One exception: if the gunner exits before the shell lands then the retaliation will target them instead and only fire once.

It cannot be suppressed.

Infrastructure Bonus:
The fire rate of the Artillery Garrison can be increased by adding certain "Garrison" type Infrastructure Modifications IconInfrastructureGarrison.png to the connected Bunker Base network. 3.33% increase per infrastructure, up to 66.6% increase with 20. Therefore the maximum achievable fire rate is once every 9 seconds at Tier 1 (6.7rnds/min), once every 7.8 seconds at Tier 2 (7.7rnds/min), and once every 6 seconds at Tier 3 (10rnds/min).

Resistance

It is immune to small arms, fragmentation grenades, and 12.7mm machine gun fire. It's also substantially resistant to most explosives besides those dealing demolition damage.

Defensive Position

Unlike some other bunker garrison, friendly players cannot get inside it.

Tactics

Artillery Garrisons are extremely important, especially during late war, to have unlocked and built in a Bunker Base. Due to artillery's effectiveness to destroy structures and bunker bases, they are excellent in providing any Base with decent defense/deterrence for attacking artillery crews.

Trivia

  • Artillery Garrisons are not affected by smoke grenades.
  • Previously, they used to retaliate against both Explosive Damage and High Explosive Damage, but was changed to just retaliating against High Explosive damage in Update 0.48
  • During one war, there was a incident where a Artillery Garrison accidentally hit an enemy bunker's Artillery Garrison, causing them to fire against each other, creating a never-ending 'Howi Duel' as Howi Garrisons kept retaliating against each other. (effectively requiring one of the bunkers to be outright destroyed in order to stop firing)
    • This was eventually stopped after a server restart, with the bug being patched in Update 0.48.
  • The visual and audio effects of the Artillery Garrison are identical to that of the now-removed Howitzer, but it deals significantly higher damage.
