Upgrading the Wiki to a Better Standard

Planning to go through the front page and upgrade it to be far better than the Fandom port, if you see minor edits it's because I only have the time to do a small bit at a time. Cheers! User:DMJaxun 10/08/2023

Writing Future Content

Just like an old-fashioned encyclopedia, I believe that the purpose of a wikipedia is to document the present and now, and not any potential future content, especially when the developers emphasize that any future plans they mention may be tentative and subject to change. Bladerikwr (talk) 00:23, 4 April 2018 (UTC)

I agree with this. The1024 (talk) 07:51, 4 April 2018 (UTC)

Hello fellow editors. I need your opinion on what I think is going to be a major move. I'm going to combine all the static bases together into one page because they have pertinent information that relates to all of them. You can see what the page would look like on my user page. Weigh in on the matter on this discussion page. Any flaws, technical limitations, or other aspects I should know about? Your thoughts are appreciated! Bladerikwr (talk) 14:34, 22 March 2018 (UTC)

Would we want to change the name from "Maps" to Regions" within that section to better support the terminology used by the devs? Sir (talk) 20:32, 29 May 2017 (UTC)

  • -Hmm. okay, i accept this. But i want to hear other opinions. If no one is against, then we will change this. GloryOfNight (talk) 20:42, 29 May 2017 (UTC)

  • Regions sounds better imo --Africandave (talk) 16:19, 31 July 2017 (UTC)

Some Notes

Wiki is nice and simple, few things I want to bring up.--Africandave (talk) 16:19, 31 July 2017 (UTC)

  1. The image for the Clans link on the home page is not a similar style to the rest of the images and looks pretty garish.
  2. The Map pages are protected - seems unneeded unless you were getting targeted by trolls, would like to include high quality map images in the page along with "Sites (Points) of Interest" that players can find in the game that are not covered already in the Lore section.
  3. Craft subheader, Is this the best wording?
  4. No community portal / admin noticeboard in the Sidebar (Ah it's in Gamepedia section) - "Wiki staff" not usually on main page, reserved for in-game and guides. Also no link to official dev-blog / forum / discord.

Until recently there were only a few editors on the wiki, so everything is half-baked. Any help is welcome :)

  1. The Clans image is the logo of currently the biggest clan in Foxhole. Clans are not represented in-game at the moment, do you have an idea for an image to represent them?
  2. GloryOfNight protected the map pages when the game hit EA, I don't know if there was any vandalism at the time. I agree that they should be unprotected if/when it's safe to do so.
  3. Do you have a better word instead of "craft"? Those are world structures / production buildings, but the term "crafting" is used in other places on the wiki.
  4. I think the official links were in the "news" section, but that section was removed from the main page recently.

The1024 (talk) 18:44, 31 July 2017 (UTC)

The logo is outdated. 82nd Donkey Kongs has a shinier logo courtesy of DrunkRussianBear Sethfire38 (talk) 10:16, 1 August 2017 (UTC)
Ok, Yea the 82nd clan image isn't representative of clans as a whole and just a new one that is similar to the tones (grey, tan, brown) of the other would look good. I think Production or even Logistics might be better, crafting is more a survival games term. Sure, saw that News page was orphaned after a main page remodel so I marked it under cleanup. --Africandave (talk) 21:41, 2 August 2017 (UTC)
An idea for clan page image Clan.png
That image looks fine for now, I'll switch to that one. The perspective skew of the logos seem a bit wonky to me. The1024 (talk) 08:15, 3 August 2017 (UTC)
Yea was just a draft haha, either way could do a new one with the "orange ring" on it too. --Africandave (talk) 10:52, 5 August 2017 (UTC)

Main page map icons

Just an FYI there is no link to Fisherman's Row on the main wiki page. And that map itself has a player uploaded image (which is good) but we should get a high res one. (Fixed prior to Sep. 15th, 2017) (comment by Glazedham13)

I added a bunch of High Res map images today to each map. --Africandave (talk) 10:52, 5 August 2017 (UTC)
There are no stylized icons for Fisherman's Row and Weathered Expanse :( Weathered Expanse just uses the icon of another map at the moment. Maybe it's best to change all those icons by using the new map images.
Here is one for Weathered Map WeatheredExpanse.png and Fisherman's Map Fishermans.png --Africandave (talk) 10:52, 5 August 2017 (UTC)
Nice, I'll add them to the main page right away. The1024 (talk) 19:06, 5 August 2017 (UTC)
As for map images, I don't think there is a way to get high resolution maps other than taking screenshots and patching them together. As I remember, the map images in the game files don't have world structure icons. The1024 (talk) 14:51, 4 August 2017 (UTC)
Added --Africandave (talk) 10:52, 5 August 2017 (UTC)
These are nice. Even better would be if we had structure icons on the maps. But those aren't in the game files, but they could be made by taking screenshots in game. The1024 (talk) 19:06, 5 August 2017 (UTC)
The new Farranac Coast map needs its icon/link posted on the main page, as well as the Shipyard under the "Craft" section to reflect the 0.4 update. --Crater 7 (talk) 02:03, 16 September 2017 (UTC)
I added the new map. The shipyard has no suitable image yet. The main page is due to be be redesigned, maybe the whole "craft" section should be removed. The1024 (talk) 14:36, 16 September 2017 (UTC)

New Icon image for the skirmish map reaching trails here Map ReachingTrail.png --Africandave (talk) 13:10, 9 April 2018 (UTC)

Could you adjust its color to match other icons? Paul Newman Esq (talk) 21:17, 18 April 2018 (UTC)

Map pages unprotected again

FYI: Map pages are not protected anymore. The1024 (talk) 20:20, 4 August 2017 (UTC)

Main page update ideas

Just weighing in my two cents.

  1. I think we should re-word all references to crafting on the main page. I get players asking me in game how to craft their weapons and gear all the time. I think it should use the same nomenclature as in game, such as Ordering/Crate Production/Assembly and to clarify that this functionality is best used by logistics personnel.
  2. I don't think we need the Craft section at all, that information is all present from the template in the Weapons page anyway.
  3. New players need to be told that they have to assemble their weapons/gear from Town Halls and the like.
  4. The main page link to General Gameplay is already under the section general and seems largely redundant. Maybe we should send players from the main page to the Getting Started page instead and re-tool that to link to various sections and describe the nuance mechanics. Basically make a flow for new wiki visitors to travel down and get to the information quicker. Boil the game down a bit so new players aren't so lost.

Glazedham13 (talk) 15:02, 8 August 2017 (UTC)Glazedham13

I think the new user wiki experience could be improved by having a FAQ on the main page. With questions like "Where do I get a gun?", "How do I build a foxhole/truck/tank?", "How to use whatever?" (and of course: "How to switch to team chat?" :) ). Something even shorter than the getting started guide with very short answers and links to relevant pages. Like you suggested at point 4., a page to which you can send any new player and they won't get bored by a wall of text.
As for crafting, I think the word "logistics" would be a good fit. The crafting/logistics page should describe the process instead of just repeating tables. I wanted to rewrite it like that but I'm busy these days :(
There are quite a few duplicated/redundant things on the wiki (including parts of the getting started guide). All of that can be cleaned up, all it takes is more manpower I guess. The1024 (talk) 17:10, 8 August 2017 (UTC)

All good points. I've added a starter FAQ page that may be able to be linked on the main page. Something else I've noticed, most of our pages are hilariously broken on mobile.

  • Color schemes are out of whack, maybe the MediaWiki upgrade did this?
  • Hard to read color contrasts in a lot of spots
  • Off styling with collapsible lists, multiple horizontal bars

Just letting you guys know. I'm not an official web developer so I haven't dug into the html and css (or templating for that matter). I can if you want but it'll take me a bit to learn. Glazedham13 (talk) 19:09, 9 August 2017 (UTC)Glazedham13

I never looked at the wiki on mobile :) I don't know if there's anything I can do about that, but I'll take a look one of these days. The1024 (talk) 08:10, 10 August 2017 (UTC)

Community section

How about having another page in community section dedicated to active hubs like forums, reddits and such? I know that similiar wikia section is more like a graveyard of old clans, so sorting by audience should be a priority to keep it relevant over time. Paul Newman Esq (talk) 22:25, 4 April 2018 (UTC)

We have Foxhole Wiki:Community portal, so maybe consider that instead. Bladerikwr (talk) 23:42, 4 April 2018 (UTC)

Icon spacing

Can somebody make it equal? One item takes 10% width, another takes 13%... At least it's not a fixed table. (Maybe slap like a blank image with n pixels width so every icon has same max width element...) Paul Newman Esq (talk) 23:35, 6 April 2018 (UTC)
