The Outpost is a player-built Forward Base, and the Tier 3 upgrade for an Encampment.
Construction
The Outpost can only be constructed by upgrading a Field Base with a Construction Vehicle. Additionally, Outposts must be unlocked in the Tech Tree, as well as the Encampment having the Large Garrison 
upgrade fully unlocked.
Upgrades
Base Upgrades are additional functionalities that the base can unlock. They are slowly and automatically unlocked over time. Upgrades progress faster the more people assign their spawn to that base. A particular upgrade can be sped up by voting for it in the menu of the Base if you've assigned your spawn there. Progression is also sped up by things like supplying the base and building structures. You can check the base upgrades unlocked at a given FOB by hovering your mouse over its icon on the map.

Provisional Garrison | Connects the base to nearby defensive structures (80m radius). Defensive structures will deactivate if player activity is too low. |

Trivia
- Outposts and Field Bases were removed in Update 1.50 (officially known as 'Inferno'), as they were considered 'legacy' pieces
- These pieces (alongside other content) were removed from the game as they did not fit the current vision of the game, similar to how the Bunker Base system replaced the old defense structures
- Despite having the look and durability of Tier 3 structures (like Concrete bunker pieces), it does not require Concrete Materials in order to be upgraded
- The Outpost was the only version of the Encampment that players could walk into
- Despite being able to, players would spawn either outside of it, or on top of it (depended on location and amount of nearby players close by)
