A shell that ignites midair and illuminates a large area, revealing enemy targets.
In-game description

The Flare Mortar Shell is an artillery Shell that illuminates an area during the night.

Uses

Specifications

Like other artillery shells it is indirect fire: it has a natural inaccuracy which increases with range, its trajectory is affected by the wind, and it can trigger the retaliation of Howitzer Garrisons.

It detonates high in the air, illuminating an area in a 30m radius for 30 seconds. Visibility in that circle is the same as regular daylight. Soldiers hidden in bushes or behind solid objects remain hidden. The shell can be fired at any time of day but their effect is pointless during daylight.

It deals no damage.

Storage

Flare Mortar Shell does not stack in inventories (1 per slot) with two exceptions:

  • in inventory of a player wearing a Heavy Ammo Uniform (stacks of 2 per slot)
  • in ammo slots dedicated to Flare Mortar Shell in certain vehicle or structure inventories (varying stack sizes)

It can be stored in Base stockpiles.

Flare Mortar Shell crates can be stored in the stockpile of a Storage Depot, Seaport, or Storage Ship. Crates can be submitted to any stockpile that accept Flare Mortar Shell to transfer their content into it.

Tactics

Due to its large area of effect the flare mortar shell doesn't require as much firing accuracy as other mortar shells types to be effective. However you should always try to have your flares only illuminate areas with enemy presence but not so far from friendly lines that your allies cannot use the illumination to their advantage. The illumination effect can also be used to help the vision range of garrisoned defenses at night.
