This article is timeless and should be accurate for any version of the game.

One of the most storied mass-market 0-6-2 locomotives engineered by the Bassett Motor Society, this coal-powered industrial train engine is reliable, tested, and incredibly durable. The Black Bolt’s legacy is unmatched having aided the Bassett Motor Society in supplying countries across the globe.
In-game description

The BMS Black Bolt (also known as a Locomotive) is an open-aired, mid-game logistics large train designed to connect to other train cars in order to haul large amounts of materials, resources, and equipment (such as shippable structures, and vehicles). It can only move on Railway Tracks.

General Info

Crew

The BMS Black Bolt houses a crew of two soldiers:

  • Driver (Seat 1)
    • Controls the movement of the vehicle, and can see the remaining fuel in the vehicle
    • Able to see the path the Locomotive will take on the railway tracks
  • Fireman (Seat 2)
    • Can consume 15 Coal to boost the Locomotive's speed for 5 seconds - press LMB
    • Requires a BMS Rockhold attached directly behind it in order to operate

Armament

The BMS Black Bolt is not equipped with a main armament.

Inventory

It has 3 inventory slots that can hold any item. It primarily uses coal (stacks up to 100).

Engine & Mobility

Unlike other vehicles the Locomotive is reversing (and thus moving slower) when it's pushing cars instead of pulling them. It's not based on the orientation of the locomotive or whether you're pressing S.

Two locomotives can be attached at each end of the same train but only one can be used at a time. The driver seat of the second locomotive cannot be entered if the first locomotive has a driver.

Interactions

  • Couple two cars together - hold Shift + E and press Couple Cars (they must be touching/close together)
  • Decouple two connected cars - requires a Wrench used in the area between the two cars
  • If it has a BMS Roadhouse attached to it, it will repair any railway tracks underneath it

List of haulable Train Cars

A train can have up to 15 cars connected, Locomotive(s) included.

Storage & Transport

The BMS Black Bolt cannot be stored in a Storage Depot, Seaport or Storage Ship.

It can be packaged into an extra large Shippable and transported by a Large Crane, otherwise it must be moved on Railway Tracks.

Tactics

Trains are limited to where they can be used, as they can only travel on Railway Tracks (similar to how Freighters are limited to where waterways are located). As such, they have very defined areas of movement, making attacks from partisans very easy if they find them. Due to this vulnerability, it's highly recommended to have numerous intel coverage/AI protection along train tracks in order to keep trains as safe as possible.

Trivia

  • When the BMS Black Bolt was introduced in Update 1.50 ('Inferno'), the ability to ram and destroy vehicles was over tuned, which resulted in friendly unarmored vehicles being instantly destroyed if they ever got close to it.
    • It is one of the few vehicles capable of destroying vehicles by ramming them. This was later change so that it will only destroy them if there is no players inside of them.
  • Unlike its IRL counterparts, it cannot be derailed and will automatically stops at the end of a track.
  • If the BMS Black Bolt is driven slowly enough (with intermittent inputs from players to move), the Train and all attached cars can move without consuming fuel. This is most useful when offloading a delivery or making minor adjustments in reverse.
