The Acheron is an armoured amphibious vehicle designed for carrying troops across large bodies of water to aid in coordinated beach landings and flanking assaults.
In-game description

The AB-8 “Acheron” is the standard Colonial Landing APC, an amphibious armored vehicle with open space in the back for passengers. The passengers in the back are able to fire Small Arms out the sides of the vehicle. It has a deployable ramp.

General Info

Crew

The AB-8 “Acheron” holds:

  • Driver (Seat 1)
    • Controls the movement of the vehicle
    • Can open/close the rear ramp by pressing F.
    • Can open/close Drawbridge (when next to it) - press E
  • Passenger (Seat 2)

The large open space in the back has enough room to fit up to 6 people. The rear passengers are partially covered but are still vulnerable to incoming fire from the sides and rear unless they crouch. The rear passengers get inside through the lowered ramp. If the APC is on water they can vault in it. The rear passengers can vault out of the vehicle.

The vehicle is not able to move if the ramp is lowered, if there are more than 6 passengers, or if any of them is encumbered but can still rotate.

Armament

It possesses no armament beyond what the rear passengers are armed with. However those soldiers cannot use heavy weaponry (R.P.G.s, Anti-Tank Rifle, 12.7mm Machine Guns, etc...) when the ramp is not lowered.

Inventory

It has 6 inventory slots, which can be accessed by the rear passengers.

Engine & Mobility

The vehicle cannot move or turn while the ramp is down.

Health & Armor

The AB-8 “Acheron” has 1650 HP and is disabled under 50% health. It has "Light Armor" resistance: it can soak small arms fire and shrapnel, and it is immune to Flamethrowers. But it won't last long when faced with 12.7mm machine guns, heavy explosives, or anti-tank weaponry.
It has subsystems that have a chance to be disabled by heavy explosives and anti-tank weaponry if hit specifically: Tracks: 25% (Anti-Tank Mines always disable them).
It has Tank Armor. With it, in best case scenario, penetrating projectiles only have a 55% chance of penetrating and doing damage. That chance goes up quickly if the armor is worn or if it is shot from up close, or on the side or rear from a direct angle, or with ammo that has penetration bonuses.
It takes 140 Basic Materials to fully repair it from 1% to 100% health with a Hammer. Its health, subsystems, and Tank Armor can be instantly repaired at a Garage for 100 Basic Materials.

Interactions

The AB-8 “Acheron” can:

  • Open/Close Drawbridge (when next to it): E
  • Open/Close its ramp with F

Storage & Transport

The AB-8 “Acheron” can be stored in a Storage Depot, Seaport or Storage Ship.

It can be packaged into a large Shippable and transported only by certain Shipping Vehicles (Barge, Freighter, Storage Ship, Flatbed Car, or Large Crane).

Tips

  • The ramp does not need to be lowered for people to exit the APC, the vehicle just needs to be stopped, from there people are able to vault over the side.
  • An APC can temporarily be used as a form of (albeit expensive) cover for troops, by placing the vehicle on the front and lowering the ramp. Allows infantry to enter and use an elevated shooting platform.
  • APCs carrying passengers equipped with Sticky Bombs are often used as an effective counter to Gunboats.

Tactics

The AB-8 “Acheron” is best suited utilized as a troop transport vehicle and for small assaults, As such, it can be an effective tool for destroying enemy defenses using variety of weapons. These include High Explosive Grenades as the passengers are able to use these whilst being shielded by the armor of the APC. With a well supplied and organized crew an APC can make quick work of most light Defenses.

It is important to never over-encumber yourself as a passenger because the driver must be able to escape quickly. It is strongly recommended that at least one passenger is equipped with a First Aid Kit and Trauma Kit which allows the APC to stay in the fight much longer by keeping people alive.

The vehicle is best used with the rear armor towards the enemy as this allows the infantry inside to shoot clearly (you cannot shoot over the front cabin). A majority of driving an APC as a combat vehicle is done by reversing, this also means that in situations where retreating is needed you are able to quickly escape just by driving forwards.

Gas Grenades are one of the biggest threats to APCs, able to fully wipe the entire crew out if they are not equipped with Gas Masks. As with all vehicles it is strongly advised all crew members and passengers are equipped with gas masks and additional Filters.

APCs are extremely useful to use as a precursor to a naval invasion. They can also be used as an effective ferry due to the higher speed in water compared to a barge, delivering more troops and supplies to the fronts.

The APC armor makes it fairly durable against small arms and shrapnel. However it can't last long against anything heavier. Heavy calibers (12.7mm), heavy explosives (Sticky Bombs, HE Grenades, 30mm), anti-vehicle weapons (AT Rifle, R.P.G.), artillery, mortar, and tank shells will quickly damage the APC.

APCs can trigger Anti-tank Mines which instantly tracks them, and the infantry at the back cannot spot enemy mines off-road despite not being technically inside the vehicle.

Trivia

  • The AB-8 “Acheron” bears a close resemblance to the American LVT-1 (Landing Vehicle, Tracked)
  • “Acheron” is the name of a river in northwestern Greece. In Greek mythology, Charon ferried the souls of the dead across the river Acheron to the underworld
